5 tips to ensure safety while purchasing cloud solutions for SMEs

EEnsuring the security of cloud solutions is crucial for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) aiming to leverage cloud computing’s benefits. According to Eurostat, 22% of EU businesses purchased cloud computing services in 2016, with large enterprises (45%) leading the adoption compared to SMEs (21%). To safeguard your SME when procuring cloud services, consider the following steps:

1. Assess Your Security Requirements

Identify the types of data and applications you plan to migrate to the cloud. Determine the necessary security measures, such as data encryption, access controls, and compliance with relevant regulations like GDPR.

2. Evaluate Cloud Service Providers (CSPs)

Research potential CSPs to ensure they offer robust security features. Look for providers that comply with recognized security standards and certifications, such as ISO 27001 or the CISPE Data Protection Code of Conduct.

3. Prioritize Data Protection

According to Eurostat, over 30% of enterprises using the cloud emphasize security features like encryption. SMEs should implement robust data protection measures such as:

  1. Encrypting sensitive data during transfer and storage.
  2. Using two-factor authentication (2FA) for access control.
  3. Regularly updating security protocols to mitigate evolving threats.
4. Educate Your Team

Human error is a leading cause of cloud security breaches. SMEs must train employees to recognize phishing attempts, create strong passwords, and follow best practices for accessing and managing cloud resources.

5. Monitor and Audit Cloud Usage

Regularly monitor cloud activities to detect any unusual behavior or potential security breaches. Implement logging and auditing mechanisms to maintain visibility over your cloud environment.

By leveraging secure cloud solutions and adhering to best practices, SMEs can enjoy the benefits of flexibility and scalability without compromising on security. The insights provided by Eurostat highlight the importance of informed decision-making and robust strategies in navigating the cloud computing landscape safely.
